We have watched the bustling areas of Lafayette and West Lafayette grow and change in great ways.
Welcome to Lafayette, West Lafayette, Indiana home to Purdue University Boilermakers. The Greater Lafayette area has been dubbed, “Two Great Cities, One Great University”. Tippecanoe County, population in 2007 was 163,374, (West Lafayette, 31,079 and Lafayette 63,679) holds a piece in history as the Battle of Tippecanoe took place just outside of Lafayette. Our small community charm combined with excellence in art, education, business and culture make it an exciting place for good living.
Our homes of Lafayette and West Lafayette range from downtown historic, homes for the first time homebuyer, to executive homes. New housing additions have sprung up in the last few years offering many choices for new families coming to our area. Residents are getting more house for their money than in other parts of the country. In 2009 the average price for homes sold was in the upper 130’s.
Our historic downtown Lafayette is encircled with restaurants, antiques, and eclectic shopping. Enjoy a cup of Java and then stroll over the Myers Pedestrian Bridge to the Wabash Landings in West Lafayette. Throughout the year Lafayette events are occurring from the Taste of Tippecanoe in the summer, Feast of the Hunters Moon in the fall to the Dickens of a Christmas Parade and Purdue’s PMO Holiday showcase in December.
As our two great cities of West Lafayette and Lafayette meet by bridges over the Wabash River, they work together as a single business advocate. Our employers in Tippecanoe County are as diverse as our people. Purdue University and Research Park, Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA), Navco (new owner of the Eli Lilly Co in Lafayette), Tayte and Lyle (A.E. Staley), Wabash National, Caterpillar, and Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (SIA) are among the larger companies in our area.
Business parks are also growing to the east side of Lafayette. Cascada Business Park is one of many new medical and professional areas that is developing around the two new hospitals. Clarion Arnette opened their new hospital off McCartey Lane and 500 East in October of 2008. St. Elizabeth’s new hospital is to open mid December 2009.
Education in the Tippecanoe County area includes three different school corporations. Tippecanoe County School Corporation has two high schools, McCutcheon High School on the south side of Lafayette and Harrison High School on the North part of West Lafayette. In 2010 Harrison and McCutcheon are each adding $14 million advanced studies centers. There are six middle schools and ten elementary schools. The county schools continue to grow with their latest addition of Woodland elementary on the south side of Lafayette.
Jefferson High school, two middle schools and nine elementary schools are included in the Lafayette School Corporation. “Jeff” High School recently had over 30,000 square feet of new construction added to complete the Rohrman Performance Arts Center. It is a state-of-the art facility that provides two choral rehearsal rooms and two instrumental rooms. Also two classroom labs were added a Music Theory and Composition lab and a piano lab with sixteen digital pianos. Sunnyside Middle School also completed a renovation that includes a two level academic wing and an enlarged library.
West Lafayette School Corporation includes a Cumberland elementary a k-3 school and Happy Hollow a 4-6th grade elementary. The Jr./Sr. High School, 7-12, and Happy Hollow were both 4 star rated schools. The highest state distinction based on academic achievement. Cumberland elementary missed the honors by 1/10 of a point based on attendance. In 2009 the West Lafayette High School football team won state in their division.
There are also many choices among the private schools in Lafayette as well. Lafayette Catholic School System includes St. Mary k-3, St. Boniface 4-6 and St. Lawrence k-6 for the elementary schools and Central Catholic for the high school. A capital campaign in 2009 raised 4.6 million dollars for renovations on the high school that included a new chapel and entrance to the school as well as a new science lab. In 2009 the high school baseball and football teams both won state in their division.
Faith Christian school, started in 1997, is a k-12 school. In August 2001 the school combined with Highland Christian School. Lafayette Christian School a k-8 school is also having major renovations adding a 2nd story new library more classrooms and cafeteria.
Our energetic community of Lafayette and West Lafayette provides its residence with time at the little league ball fields with friends and families to enjoying the arts at Purdue University’s Elliot Hall.
